Beeatrice
Beeatrice is the cartoon mascot of the New York Times Spelling Bee.
In every edition of the Spelling Bee Beeatrice appears at first sans chapeau, as shown at left. When a player achieves "Genius" level, she dons a mortarboard (below left), then doffs the mortarboard and dons a crown when a player has attained Queen Bee status (second from left, below). (More on Spelling Bee rankings may be found HERE.)
Sharp-eyed players have spotted other headgear on certain holidays, or to mark special Spelling Bee occasions, such as Hallowe'en, Valentine's Day, Beeatrice's fifth birthday, New Year's Eve and New Year's Day 2024, New Year's Eve and New Year's Day 2025, and April Fool's Day 2025.
The Spelling Bee of March 12, 2025 was the 2500th regular Bee puzzle published since the online Spelling Bee had its début on May 9, 201818. The opening screen of the March 12 Bee is shown HERE, with Spelling Bee mascot Beeatrice surrounded by animated celebratory fizziness.
